Orthodontic Treatment

There are numerous non invasive orthodontic treatments that orthodontists use to correct the position of the teeth.  The two most common methods are with the use of Orthodontic braces and retainers.  In most cases, both methods must be used as they go hand in hand.  However, there are some cases where only one method needs to be used.  Learn more about these orthodontic treatments below.

Orthodontic Braces
The most common orthodontic treatment involves braces.  Braces are used to align the teeth for that perfectly straight smile.  This orthodontic treatment is made up of brackets that are basically glued to the teeth with arch wires that are strategically placed throughout the brackets.  It is the job of the arch wires to place pressure on the teeth to move them into their correct position.  You can read more about the different types of braces like traditional metal braces, gold braces and ceramic braces in our Types of Braces section.

Orthodontic Retainers
Another common orthodontic treatment that is used are retainers.  Orthodontic retainers can be made out of plastic or stainless steel.  They are typically used after one’s braces have been removed to ensure that the teeth stay in place.  Basically the teeth become accustomed to staying in their place while the bone and gums surrounding the teeth get accustomed to the new position of the teeth when the retainer is worn.  If the retainer is not worn, the teeth may become misaligned once again.  Most orthodontists recommend that the retainer is worn at night for a long period of time.
